This general term is given to a group of disorders in the development of the brain known as Autism. Such disorders are complex in nature and characterized when the child suffering from this disease experiences difficulty in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction and all sorts of repetitive behaviours.
Autism is a neural disorder which is characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication. A child with autism is unable to communicate which is very difficult as he/she struggles to express feelings or needs. It is also difficult for parents to understand.
When a child experiences difficulty in motor coordination and attention, intellectual disability and health issues which are physical in nature, it is all related to Autism or ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Having its root in quite early development of the brain, the common symptoms of autism can be seen in children between 2 to 3 years of age.
The statistics from the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal that there is 1 in every 68 children who suffer from autism and that this disease has increased tremendously in the last 4 decades. Autism has also been studied to be more prevalent (almost 5 times more) amongst boys than girls.
Physical therapy has a lot to contribute to children suffering from autism. It helps such children develop age-appropriate physical skills and children having low muscle tone or experiencing problems related to breathing control can also improve their condition. Moreover, many physical therapists conduct specially constructed exercise programs for older autistic children. Such therapies help autistic children improve their posture, address chest wall deformities and misalignments in the musculoskeletal system.
There is no such known cause of autism. However, in the last few years, scientists have discovered a change in the number of rare genes or mutations which can be linked to this disease. This disease is caused when certain autism risk genes combine with environmental factors and influence the early brain development of the child.
